Aldershot is the Home of the British Army, and it still feels like it, with the garrison, the military museum and generations of service families in the town. GU12 covers the east of Aldershot along with Ash, Ash Vale and Tongham, on the Surrey border. For Gatwick, it is about 45 miles east across Surrey. A taxi from Aldershot GU12 to Gatwick Airport costs from £109 for a saloon, fixed at booking, collected from your door.
The route east
There are two main routes. The motorway route takes the A331 Blackwater Valley Road north to the M3 at junction 4, east to the M25 at junction 12, then clockwise round to the M23. The cross-country route takes the A31 Hog's Back to Guildford, then the A25 or A3 to the M25 at junction 10, or the A25 all the way through Dorking and Reigate. Both are around 45 miles.
In normal traffic, plan on 55 minutes to an hour and five minutes. The M25 junction 10 at Wisley, and the A3 and A31 around Guildford, are the usual slow spots. For early flights, the motorway is usually quickest.
Around GU12
- Aldershot east: the streets around North Town and the edge of the town centre.
- Ash and Ash Green: villages just over the border in Surrey, with houses along the Ash Street and Guildford Road.
- Ash Vale: close to the Basingstoke Canal and Ash Vale station.
- Tongham: a village near the A31 and the Hog's Back.
Aldershot's central and western areas are mostly in GU11, and we cover those too. For the newer housing on the former garrison land at Wellesley, some roads may not be on every satnav; add a landmark or the development name.
Service families and the garrison
Many of our Aldershot bookings are for service personnel and their families, travelling for postings, deployments or leave. If you need a pickup or drop-off at a barracks or other military site, tell us which gate. Drivers cannot enter the sites, but they will meet you at the gate. For a lot of kit, choose an estate or MPV.
Train or taxi?
Aldershot, Ash and Ash Vale have stations, but there is no direct train to Gatwick. The usual route is a train to Guildford, then the Great Western Railway service along the North Downs line to Gatwick, which takes around an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half. For a solo traveller with light luggage, that works and costs less.
For families, anyone with heavy luggage, or early flights before the trains run regularly, the car is much simpler. For three or four people, the fixed fare compares well.
Farnborough Airshow
Every other July, the Farnborough International Airshow takes place a few miles north of Aldershot, and the roads around it are very busy. If you are flying in for the show, or flying out during airshow week, tell us when you book, and the driver will plan a route around the traffic.
Gatwick's drop-off charges
If a friend is driving you, warn them that Gatwick has charged £10 for the first ten minutes in its forecourt drop-off zones since January 2026, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes, enforced by cameras. The free option is the Long Stay car park, which allows up to two hours with a shuttle bus. None of that applies to a pre-booked transfer, because the fare already covers it.
Timing your pickup
As a guide, leave Aldershot around three hours before a short-haul flight and three and a half hours before long-haul. When you book, we will recommend a pickup time based on your flight and terminal.
Coming home to Aldershot
The same fixed fare applies from Gatwick to GU12. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with a name board and helps with your luggage to the car. If your flight is delayed, the pickup moves at no extra cost. Many service families book both legs together, and return bookings get five per cent off the way back.
Families and holiday luggage
For family holidays, choose the car for the luggage. An estate takes four large cases; an MPV takes six passengers with their bags. Child seats are free; give us the children's ages when you book, and they will be fitted before the car arrives.
What to tell us when you book
Your flight number and terminal, the full address with postcode or the barracks gate, the number of passengers and cases, and a mobile number that works when you land.
