Canterbury is one of those places that looks close to Gatwick on a map of the South East and turns out to be a fair trek. You are crossing from Sussex into east Kent, past Sevenoaks and Maidstone, before the cathedral spire comes into view. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Canterbury costs from £159 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and takes you straight to the door, whether that is a house in the city, a hall at one of the universities or a cottage in the villages around.

How the drive goes

From Gatwick the driver heads up the M23, joins the M25 eastbound, and leaves at junction 5 for the M26, which links into the M20 past Maidstone. From the M20, the most direct way into Canterbury is the A28 through Chartham, or the A2 via the M2 if the A28 is slow. Allow an hour and twenty to thirty-five minutes in normal traffic.

The M20 is the road to watch. When the Channel ports are busy, freight traffic and occasional traffic-management schemes around Ashford and Folkestone can slow the eastern end. Our drivers check the conditions before leaving Gatwick and switch to the M2 if needed.

The city centre and the walls

Canterbury's medieval centre is compact and partly pedestrianised, inside the old city walls. Cars cannot drive along much of the High Street or St Margaret's Street during the day, and some of the lanes near the cathedral are only open to access traffic. If you are staying inside the walls, give us the full address and the driver will get you as close as the restrictions allow, usually within a minute or two's walk.

For hotels and guesthouses just outside the walls, along the Old Dover Road, St Dunstan's or the New Dover Road, the car can pull up at the door.

Students and universities

The University of Kent's campus is on the hill north-west of the city, with its colleges and student villages spread across a large site. Canterbury Christ Church University is in the centre near the cathedral. At the start and end of term we carry a lot of international students from Gatwick, usually with plenty of luggage. Give us the college or hall name and block, and if you have a lot of bags, book an estate or MPV.

The train alternative

There is no direct train from Gatwick to Canterbury. The usual routes involve going into London and taking a Southeastern high-speed service from St Pancras to Canterbury West, or travelling across Kent via Redhill and Tonbridge with connections to Ashford and Canterbury. Expect around two to two and a half hours.

For a solo traveller with light bags who does not mind changing, the train is cheaper. With two or more people, plenty of luggage, or a late landing, the car is usually the more practical choice.

Gatwick drop-off charges and free alternatives

If someone is driving you back to Gatwick for your flight home, they should know that Gatwick now charges £10 for the first ten minutes in its forecourt drop-off zones, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. The charge went up from £7 in January 2026 and is paid online by midnight the next day. The Long Stay car park gives two hours free with a shuttle bus to the terminals. With a pre-booked taxi, the fixed fare covers all of that.

Villages around Canterbury

We also cover the villages and towns nearby: Bridge, Chartham, Sturry, Fordwich, Wingham, Herne Bay, Whitstable and Faversham. For Whitstable and Herne Bay the driver usually takes the A299 Thanet Way, which adds a few miles. Enter your exact postcode for a fixed price.

Visiting the cathedral and the city

Canterbury Cathedral is the mother church of the Anglican Communion and one of the most visited places in England, which is why so many people come straight from the airport to stay in the city for a few days. Hotels cluster near the cathedral, along the river Stour and just outside the walls. If you are arriving for a wedding, a graduation in the cathedral or a pilgrimage group, tell us the venue and the driver will get you as close as possible, bearing in mind that much of the precinct is pedestrian only.

For groups, an eight-seat MPV brings everyone together, and the price is fixed for the whole vehicle.

Meeting at Gatwick

After passport control and baggage reclaim, walk through into arrivals and look for your name on a board. Your driver will help with your bags and walk you to the short-stay car park. If your flight is early or late, the driver already knows from the flight tracking, and the waiting time after landing is included.
