Banstead is a village on the North Downs that has grown into a small town without losing its village feel. The High Street still has independent shops, and the Banstead Downs and the heath surround it on almost every side. It is also one of the closest places in Surrey to Gatwick. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Banstead costs from £49 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and gets you home in under half an hour on a normal day.
A short run over the Downs
From Gatwick, the driver usually heads up the M23 to junction 7, takes the M25 west to junction 8, and then follows the A217 north over Reigate Hill and through Kingswood and Burgh Heath into Banstead. Another route goes north on the A23 through Horley and Redhill, then up the A217 or the B2219. The motorway route is usually quicker.
The distance is about 13 miles. Without traffic, it takes 25 to 30 minutes. The A217 at Burgh Heath, where the traffic lights at the junction with the A240 Reigate Road back up, is the main slow point at rush hour. Late evening and early morning trips are noticeably quicker.
Around SM7
SM7 covers Banstead village and the High Street, Nork on the western side towards Epsom Downs, Burgh Heath to the south, Woodmansterne to the east and the quiet residential roads around Park Downs and the Drift Bridge. Most of these streets are easy to reach, with plenty of space to stop. On the High Street itself, parking is limited, so if you live in a flat above a shop, tell us the nearest side road.
We also cover the villages nearby: Chipstead, Kingswood, Tadworth, Walton on the Hill and Epsom Downs. Enter your full address for a fixed price.
Train or taxi from Gatwick?
Banstead station is on the Epsom Downs branch line, which runs from Sutton. There is no direct train to Gatwick. You would need to change at Sutton, then again at East Croydon or Redhill. That makes it at least an hour, often more, with two changes. For a 13-mile trip, most people find the car far more practical, especially with luggage.
Why short airport trips have a minimum fare
For a journey of this length, the fixed fare covers more than the miles. The driver still has to drive to Gatwick, park in the short-stay car park, meet you in arrivals and wait while you clear passport control. Airport charges also apply. That is why short trips have a sensible minimum. In return, you get a fixed price agreed before you fly, not a meter ticking while you wait for bags.
Gatwick drop-off charges for the trip out
When you fly out again, and someone else is driving you, it helps to know the forecourt rules. Since January 2026, Gatwick has charged £10 for the first ten minutes in the drop-off zones outside North and South Terminal, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. Cameras log the number plate, and the charge must be paid online by midnight the next day. Miss it and the penalty is £100, reduced to £60 if paid within a fortnight.
The free option is the Long Stay car park, where drop-off is free for up to two hours with a shuttle bus. Blue Badge holders are exempt. With a pre-booked taxi, you do not need to think about any of this.
Epsom Derby week
Epsom Downs Racecourse is on Banstead's doorstep, and during the Derby Festival in early June, the roads around Epsom Downs, Tattenham Corner and the A240 can be very busy or closed. If you are flying in or out that week, tell us when you book, and the driver will plan a route that avoids the worst of it.
Meet and greet
Your driver tracks your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name board. After you collect your bags, they walk you to the car in the short-stay car park. If your flight is delayed, the pickup moves at no extra cost.
Golf and the Downs
Banstead is surrounded by golf courses, including Banstead Downs, Cuddington and Walton Heath a few miles to the south, which has hosted major championships. Golfers flying in to play often bring clubs and need an estate or MPV rather than a saloon. Mention the clubs when you book, and if you are going straight to a course or a hotel near one, enter that as your destination.
Families heading home
For families coming back from holiday, the right size car makes the trip easier. An estate takes four large cases, and an MPV takes a family of six with their bags. Child seats are free; just tell us the ages of the children.
