The quick way home

From Gatwick, the driver usually takes the M23 north to junction 7 and the M25 east to junction 6 at Godstone, then the A22 north into Caterham Valley. Alternatively, the driver can use the A23 to Redhill and the A25 to Godstone, or come up through Merstham and over the Downs on Rockshaw Road, depending on traffic. It is about 12 miles.

In normal traffic, it takes 20 to 25 minutes. The Godstone interchange and the A22 at Whyteleafe are the usual slow spots at rush hour. For late-night arrivals, the trip is often under 20 minutes.

Caterham on the Hill and Caterham Valley

Caterham has two halves, and the driver needs to know which you are in. Caterham Valley is the area around the station, the high street on Church Walk and Croydon Road, and the steep roads climbing both sides of the valley. Caterham on the Hill is up on the plateau around Coulsdon Road, Banstead Road and the old Guards Depot site, now the residential village. The two are linked by steep, winding roads like Church Hill and Waller Lane.

CR3 also covers Whyteleafe, Chaldon, Woldingham and the southern edge of Warlingham. Woldingham's roads are often private, with large houses set back among trees. Give us the house name and any gate instructions.

Short trips and the fixed fare

For a short airport run, the fixed fare covers more than the mileage. Your driver drives to Gatwick, parks in the short-stay car park, meets you in arrivals and waits while you clear passport control and collect bags, and the airport charges are included. That is why short trips have a minimum fare. In return, you get a fixed price and a driver already waiting, instead of a queue at the rank.

Train or taxi?

Caterham station is at the end of the branch line from Purley, and there is no direct train to Gatwick. You would usually change at Purley or East Croydon. With good connections, it is around 45 minutes to an hour. For a solo traveller who lives near the station, that works. For families, travellers on the Hill or in Woldingham, or anyone landing late, the car is easier.

Gatwick's drop-off charges

If a friend is dropping you off for your next flight, the forecourt drop-off zones outside Gatwick's terminals have cost £10 for the first ten minutes since January 2026, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. Cameras log the plate, and payment is due online by midnight the next day, with a £100 penalty for missing it. The free option is the Long Stay car park, which allows two hours with a shuttle bus. Meet and greet

The driver follows your flight and is waiting in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. After you collect your bags, they walk you to the car. Delays move the pickup time automatically, at no cost to you.

Leaving Caterham for Gatwick

The same fixed fare applies in reverse. Because you are close, you can leave relatively late: around two hours before a short-haul flight and two and a half hours before long-haul. For a 6am flight, a 4am pickup is usually plenty.

Families and luggage

For families coming home from holiday, an estate takes four large cases and an MPV takes six passengers with their bags. Child seats are free; give us the ages of the children when you book, and the seats will be fitted before the driver reaches Gatwick.

Late arrivals

Caterham's branch line runs less often in the evening, and the connections from Gatwick via Purley can mean long waits late at night. A pre-booked car is waiting whatever time you land, at the same fixed fare.
