Bristol has its own airport, but it does not have the long-haul routes that Gatwick does, so plenty of Bristolians and visitors land in Sussex and then face a long journey west. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Bristol City costs from £269 for a saloon, fixed at booking, for around 135 miles of mostly motorway driving straight to your door.
The route west
The driver heads up the M23 to the M25, goes anticlockwise to junction 15 and then takes the M4 all the way west, past Reading, Newbury and Swindon. Most Bristol addresses are reached from junction 19, down the M32 into the city, which comes out close to Cabot Circus and the centre. For the south of the city, Bedminster or Knowle, the driver may stay on the M4 to the M5 and come in from the south-west instead.
Without stops it is two and a half to two and three quarter hours. The M25 around Heathrow and the M4 near Reading are the usual bottlenecks.
Getting around Bristol
Bristol's centre has a Clean Air Zone, bus lanes and a few streets closed to through traffic. None of that affects you as a passenger, and our vehicles are compliant, but it does mean a driver who knows the city will get you to the door faster than one following a satnav.
Common drop-offs include the harbourside and Wapping Wharf, Clifton and Redland, the university precinct around Park Street and Tyndall Avenue, and the hospitals: the Bristol Royal Infirmary in the centre and Southmead in the north. For Clifton, give us a house number and street, since some of the roads around the Downs look alike.
Train or car?
Rail is a reasonable option for some travellers. The Great Western Railway service from Gatwick reaches Reading, where you change for Bristol Temple Meads, and the whole trip usually takes about three hours with a good connection. Temple Meads is on the edge of the centre, so many addresses still need a bus or taxi from there.
For one person travelling light with time to spare, the train will usually be cheaper. Once you add luggage, children, a late arrival or more than one passenger, a single fixed fare for the whole car tends to make more sense. Four adults on peak-time tickets can easily cost more than the car.
Breaks and comfort on a long drive
Two and a half hours after a flight is a long sit. Your driver will stop at a services when you want to, and Membury or Leigh Delamere on the M4 are convenient halfway points. Water is available in the car. If you are travelling with a baby or young children, tell us and we will plan a stop.
For a business traveller who wants to work or sleep, the executive saloon or the Mercedes V-Class gives a quieter cabin. For families, an MPV gives everyone room and keeps the luggage separate from the passengers.
Flying out of Gatwick from Bristol
The same fixed fare works in reverse. For a morning flight we will suggest an early start to stay ahead of the M4 and M25 traffic. As a guide, leaving Bristol four and a half hours before a long-haul departure allows for the drive, check-in and security without rushing.
Gatwick's pickup rules and drop-off charges
Since January 2026, Gatwick charges £10 for ten minutes in the forecourt drop-off zones outside North and South Terminal, rising by £1 a minute after that. Cameras read the number plate and the charge has to be paid online by midnight the next day. That matters if a friend is dropping you off for your flight back from Bristol, but it does not affect a pre-booked taxi. Private hire drivers meet arriving passengers in the short-stay car parks, and the parking and drop-off costs are covered by the fixed fare.
If a relative is collecting you in their own car instead, the free option is the Long Stay car park, where drop-off and pick-up are free for up to two hours and a shuttle bus runs to both terminals. It is slower, but it costs nothing.
What to have ready when you book
A booking for a run this long goes more smoothly with a little detail. Have your flight number and Gatwick terminal, the full Bristol address with postcode, and a mobile number that will work when you land. If you are travelling with a child, give us their age so we fit the right seat. If you want to stop somewhere on the way, perhaps to drop a colleague in Swindon or collect something in Bath, add it as a stop and the extra miles are priced in before you confirm.
For company travel, we can invoice your employer directly and add a cost centre or purchase order number to the receipt.
