The London Borough of Merton covers a lot of ground: Wimbledon and its village, Colliers Wood and South Wimbledon, Mitcham, Morden and Raynes Park. Coming home from Gatwick to any of them is a 20-mile run up through Surrey. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Merton costs from £59 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and the driver will be waiting for you in arrivals. If you are leaving Merton for a flight, see our guide to Merton to Gatwick.

Arriving at Gatwick

We track your flight number from the moment you take off. If you land early, the driver is already there. If you land late, the pickup moves to your new time, and the price does not change. After passport control and baggage reclaim, walk through to the arrivals hall and look for your name on a board. The driver will help with your trolley and walk you to the short-stay car park, which is where Gatwick asks private hire drivers to wait.

The drive home

From Gatwick, the driver usually heads north on the M23, onto the M25 at junction 7, then to junction 8 and up the A217 through Banstead, Sutton and Rose Hill into Morden and the rest of the borough. Another route runs up the A23 through Purley and Croydon, which can be quicker for Mitcham. For Wimbledon and Raynes Park, the driver may come up the A24 through Epsom and Morden instead.

It is around 20 miles and 40 to 45 minutes in normal traffic. Weekday rush hours and Friday evenings can push it towards an hour, mostly because of traffic through Sutton and Rose Hill. Late-night landings are much quicker.

Wimbledon fortnight

For two weeks every summer, the Wimbledon Championships bring huge crowds and extra traffic to SW19. Roads around Church Road and the All England Club are closed or restricted, and parking is suspended on many streets. If you are flying in during the tournament, whether to watch the tennis or because you live nearby, tell us when you book. The driver will plan a route around the closures and get you as close to your door as the restrictions allow.

Across the borough

We drop off anywhere in Merton: Wimbledon town centre and Wimbledon Village, Wimbledon Park, South Wimbledon, Colliers Wood, Merton Park, Raynes Park, Morden, Mitcham and the borough's southern edges at St Helier and Pollards Hill. St George's Hospital in Tooting is just across the borough boundary and a regular destination too.

The train from Gatwick

Thameslink runs direct trains from Gatwick to Wimbledon in around 45 minutes to an hour, which is a real advantage for this part of London, and some Wimbledon-loop services also call at stations in Mitcham and Morden South. For a solo traveller with light luggage who lives near a station, it is a good option.

For families, travellers with large cases, or anyone landing late at night after the trains thin out, the door-to-door car is simpler. With three or four people, the fixed fare often comes close to the combined train fares.

Gatwick's drop-off charges, for the next trip

When you fly out again, if a friend drives you, they will need to know that Gatwick's forecourt drop-off zones have cost £10 for the first ten minutes since January 2026, rising by £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. The free option is the Long Stay car park, which allows up to two hours with a shuttle bus. With a pre-booked taxi, the fixed fare covers it.

Choosing the right car

A saloon takes up to four passengers with two large cases. For families coming home from holiday, an estate or MPV gives more space. Child seats are free.

Late arrivals into Merton

Plenty of holiday flights land at Gatwick late in the evening, especially in summer, and that is when a car is most valuable. Trains thin out, the last direct Thameslink to Wimbledon may already have gone, and nobody wants to wait on a platform at midnight with tired children. We run around the clock, and the fixed fare is the same at any hour. At that time of night the roads are clear, and you are often home in half an hour.

What to have ready when you book

Give us your return flight number and terminal, the full Merton address with postcode, a mobile number that works when you land, and the number of large cases. If you are in a block of flats, tell us which entrance faces the road. If you are coming back with more luggage than you left with, as many people do, choose a bigger car.
