Gatwick to Luton is the trip people book when a flight lands at one London airport and the cheaper connection leaves from another. On paper it looks simple. In practice it means crossing the whole western side of the M25, then running up the M1, with a fresh check-in and security queue waiting at the far end. How the drive works
From either Gatwick terminal the driver joins the M23 north, then takes the M25 anticlockwise past Heathrow before peeling off at junction 21 onto the M1. Luton Airport sits just east of the motorway at junction 10, so the last few miles are short. Door to door it is around 72 miles.
On a clear run that is about an hour and twenty minutes. The stretch between junctions 10 and 16 of the M25, around the M3 and M4 interchanges and the approach to Heathrow, is the part that decides the day. Weekday mornings and Friday afternoons can push the trip to an hour and forty minutes or more. Late evening and early morning are usually the quickest times to make the run.
Leave more time between flights than you think
If both flights are on one ticket, the airline is responsible for the connection. Most Gatwick to Luton connections are not. They are two separate bookings, often with two different budget airlines, and if you miss the second flight, the second airline is under no obligation to help.
Work backwards from the Luton departure. Bag drop for most short-haul airlines closes 40 to 60 minutes before take-off, and security at Luton can be slow at peak times. Add the drive, then add the time it takes to clear passport control and collect bags at Gatwick, which can be anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour. For most people, four hours between landing and the next departure is the minimum we would be comfortable with, and five is better.
The train alternative
There is a direct train. Thameslink runs from Gatwick Airport station straight through central London to Luton Airport Parkway, and from there the Luton DART shuttle takes you up to the terminal in a few minutes. The whole trip usually takes around an hour and three quarters to two hours.
For a solo traveller with a cabin bag and plenty of time, that is a sensible, cheaper choice, and we would not try to talk you out of it. The catches are the luggage, the crowds through central London at rush hour, and the separate DART fare at Luton Parkway. If you are carrying full-size cases, travelling with children, or working to a tight connection, one car from arrivals to departures removes most of the things that can go wrong.
What the fixed fare covers
The £159 saloon fare covers up to four passengers with two large cases and two cabin bags, from your Gatwick terminal to the Luton departures drop-off. It includes flight tracking, meet and greet in the Gatwick arrivals hall, and the airport drop-off charges at both ends. The price is agreed when you book and does not change if the M25 is slow.
Groups with more luggage should look at an estate or a six-seat MPV. For bigger parties, an eight-seat MPV keeps everyone and every bag together, which matters when you are all aiming for the same check-in desk.
Gatwick pickup and Luton drop-off
Gatwick asks private hire drivers to meet passengers in the short-stay car parks rather than on the forecourt. Your driver waits in arrivals with a name board and walks you to the car. Tell us whether you are landing at North or South Terminal, because they are on different approach roads and the meeting point is different.
At Luton, the driver takes you to the terminal drop-off zone so you can go straight to bag drop. Luton charges for its forecourt drop-off too, and that is covered by our fare. If you would rather be dropped elsewhere, for example at an airport hotel for an overnight stay before an early flight, just add it to the booking.
