Hindhead sits on one of the highest points in Surrey, at the edge of the Devil's Punch Bowl, a huge natural hollow in the heath. For years it was known for its traffic lights, where the old A3 crawled through the village. The Hindhead Tunnel took the traffic underground in 2011, and the village is quieter now, but it is still a cross-country journey from Gatwick. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Hindhead GU26 costs from £99 for a saloon, fixed at booking, with a driver waiting in arrivals.
How the drive works
There is no direct motorway route. From Gatwick, the driver usually takes the A264 or M23 to the M25, then west to junction 10, and down the A3 past Guildford to the Hindhead Tunnel, coming off at the junction for Hindhead and Grayshott. An alternative is cross-country along the A25 through Dorking and Guildford, or the A281 and A283 through Godalming, which can be quicker when the M25 is slow.
It is around 38 miles. In normal traffic, plan on 55 minutes to an hour and five minutes. The A3 through Guildford and the M25 junction 10 interchange are the usual slow spots. For late evening landings, the run is often under an hour.
Around GU26
GU26 covers Hindhead, Grayshott, Beacon Hill and the hamlets around the Punch Bowl. Grayshott is a village with its own small high street, independent shops and a strong community feel. Beacon Hill sits on the slope towards Churt and Tilford. Many properties here have names rather than numbers and are set among trees, so add the property name and a what3words reference or brief directions to your booking.
Some lanes around Grayshott and Beacon Hill are narrow and unlit. If you have booked a larger vehicle, tell us about any tight access.
The Devil's Punch Bowl
The National Trust looks after the Devil's Punch Bowl and Hindhead Commons, and since the tunnel opened, the old A3 road over the top has been returned to heathland. There is a café and car park at the top, and walking trails around the bowl, including the path up to Gibbet Hill with its views across to London on a clear day. If you are visiting rather than heading home, the car park is a good drop-off point.
Why the train is not ideal
Hindhead has no station. The nearest are Haslemere and Liphook, both on the Portsmouth line, a few miles away. A rail journey to Gatwick usually means a taxi or bus to Haslemere, a train to Guildford, and the Great Western Railway service to Gatwick, or a train into London and back out. Either way, it takes around two hours with at least two changes. For most people, the car is far more practical.
Gatwick's drop-off charges
If a neighbour is driving you to Gatwick, warn them about the forecourt charges. Since January 2026, the drop-off zones outside both terminals have cost £10 for the first ten minutes, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. Cameras log the plate and payment is due online by midnight the next day, with a £100 penalty for missing it. The free Long Stay car park allows two hours with a shuttle bus. Our fixed fare already includes it, so there is nothing to pay at the kerb.
Meet and greet
Your driver tracks your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, then walks you to the car in the short-stay car park. A late landing simply moves the pickup; it never changes the price.
Heading out from Hindhead
The same fixed fare applies from Hindhead to Gatwick. As a guide, leave around three hours before a short-haul flight and three and a half hours before long-haul. For early flights, the roads are clear and the trip is quicker.
Families and holiday luggage
For families coming home from holiday, choose a car that fits the luggage. An estate takes four large cases, and an MPV takes six passengers with their bags. Child seats are free; just give us the children's ages. If you have walking or cycling gear, mention it so we can send a suitable vehicle.
Visitors to the Surrey Hills
Hindhead and Grayshott are popular with walkers and visitors to the Surrey Hills, and several hotels and guest houses nearby welcome guests from overseas. If you are staying in one, give us its name and the driver will take you to the door.
