Fleet is a busy commuter town in north-east Hampshire, with good motorway access, a long High Street and Fleet Pond, the largest freshwater lake in the county, on its northern edge. Heathrow is closer, but for holiday flights, Gatwick is often the airport people end up using, which means a trip across Surrey. From the M3 to the M23
Fleet is close to junction 4a of the M3. From there, the driver heads east on the M3 to the M25 at junction 12, then clockwise round to junction 7 and down the M23 to Gatwick. It is around 45 miles, nearly all motorway.
In normal traffic, it takes 50 minutes to an hour. The M25 between junctions 12 and 7 is the part that varies most, especially around junction 10, where it crosses the A3 at Wisley. Weekday rush hours and Friday afternoons are the slowest. For early morning flights, the motorways are quiet and the trip is often quicker than the estimate.
Picking up around Fleet and Church Crookham
GU51 covers Fleet town centre and the High Street, the residential roads north towards Fleet Pond and the station, Elvetham Heath to the north-west, and Ancells Farm. Church Crookham, Crookham Village and the newer developments at Edenbrook and the old Queen Elizabeth Barracks site are in the neighbouring GU52 postcode, and we cover those too.
Most roads in Fleet are easy for a driver to find. In the newer developments, some roads look similar or are not yet on every satnav, so add a nearby landmark or a what3words reference if your house is new.
Why the train is hard work
Fleet has its own station on the South Western Railway line between Basingstoke and London Waterloo. There is no direct train to Gatwick. You would usually change at Woking, take a train to Guildford, and then the Great Western Railway service to Gatwick, or go into London and back out. Either way, it takes around an hour and three quarters to two hours with at least two changes. With luggage and a flight to catch, most people find the car much easier.
What your fixed fare covers
The £109 fare is for a saloon with up to four passengers, two large cases and two smaller bags, from your Fleet address to North or South Terminal. The price is agreed when you book and does not change if the M25 is slow. Larger vehicles are available for families and groups at their own fixed prices.
Gatwick's drop-off charges and the free alternative
If you are getting a lift to Gatwick from a friend or relative instead, warn them about the charges. Since January 2026, the forecourt drop-off zones outside North and South Terminal have cost £10 for the first ten minutes, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. Cameras log the number plate and payment is due online by midnight the next day, with a £100 penalty for missing it.
The free option is the Long Stay car park, where drop-off is free for up to two hours, with a shuttle bus to the terminal. Blue Badge holders are exempt. With a pre-booked taxi, our fixed fare covers it.
Timing your pickup from Fleet
As a guide, leave Fleet about two and a half hours before a short-haul departure and three hours before long-haul, adding half an hour in the school holidays. For a 6am flight, a pickup at around 3.15 to 3.30am usually works well. We will suggest an exact pickup time once we have your flight details.
