Ascot is famous for one thing above all: the racecourse. Royal Ascot in June draws visitors from all over the world, and many of them fly into Gatwick in their finery with a tight schedule. The rest of the year, Ascot is a quiet, wealthy corner of Berkshire with large houses, golf clubs and easy access to Windsor Great Park. A taxi from Gatwick to Ascot Racecourse and the SL5 area costs from £89 for a saloon, fixed at booking, with a driver waiting in arrivals.
The route from Gatwick
The driver takes the M23 north to the M25 and goes anticlockwise round to junction 13, then the A30 and A329 west through Egham and Virginia Water into Ascot. An alternative is the M3 to junction 3 at Lightwater and the A332 north. Both are about 35 miles.
On a normal day, it is 45 to 55 minutes. The M25 between junctions 7 and 13, including the A3 interchange at Wisley, is the busiest part. On race days, especially during Royal Ascot week, the last few miles into Ascot are where most of the delay happens.
Race days and Royal Ascot
Royal Ascot is held over five days in June and is one of the busiest weeks of the year on the roads around Ascot. The roads around the racecourse are subject to traffic management, some are closed or one way, and there are designated drop-off and pick-up areas for taxis and private hire vehicles. Our drivers follow the official arrangements and will drop you as close to your enclosure entrance as the plan allows.
If you are going straight from a morning flight to the races, plan carefully. Gates usually open well before the first race, and the dress code at Royal Ascot is strict, so you may want to stop at a hotel to change first. We can take you from Gatwick to your hotel, then to the racecourse, and collect you after the last race, all at fixed prices. Book these journeys early: demand for cars during Royal Ascot week is very high.
For the other race meetings throughout the year, including the King George weekend in July and Champions Day in October, the traffic is lighter but still heavier than usual. Tell us it is a race day and we will allow extra time.
Getting picked up after racing
At the end of the day, thousands of people leave the course at once. We agree a collection point with you in advance, usually the official private hire pickup area, and the driver will text you when they are in position. Allow some time for the crowds to clear. If your party is spread across different enclosures, choose a single meeting point to keep things simple.
Around SL5
Beyond the racecourse, SL5 covers Ascot's High Street, the large houses of South Ascot and Sunninghill, Sunningdale and Cheapside, and the edges of Windsor Great Park. Many properties are on private roads or behind gates, so give us any gate codes or instructions when you book. Golfers heading to Sunningdale, Wentworth or the Berkshire golf clubs can bring clubs in an estate or MPV.
Train from Gatwick to Ascot
There is no direct rail link. A train journey usually goes via Clapham Junction or Reading, and takes around an hour and three quarters to two hours. Ascot station is close to the racecourse, which makes it popular on race days, but the trains are extremely busy, and luggage is difficult to manage. For most international race-goers arriving through Gatwick, the car is the more practical option.
Gatwick's drop-off charges
If a friend drives you to Gatwick afterwards, the forecourt drop-off zones have cost £10 for the first ten minutes since January 2026, then £1 a minute to a maximum of thirty minutes. The Long Stay car park allows up to two hours free with a shuttle bus. With a pre-booked taxi, the fixed fare covers it.
Executive cars for a day at the races
For a special day, our executive saloon, the Mercedes S-Class and the electric BMW i7 come with experienced chauffeurs in business dress. For a group of friends, the Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven in comfort, and the eight-seat MPV takes a slightly larger party at a single fixed price.
Hotels around Ascot
Many race-goers and visitors stay at country house hotels around Ascot, Sunningdale and Windsor, rather than in the town itself. They are often set back from the road with long drives, and some have their own arrangements for taxis on race days. Give us the hotel name when you book and the driver will take you to the main entrance.
