How the drive works

From Morden, the driver usually heads west through Raynes Park and New Malden on the A298 or the A3, then crosses to the A316 at Kingston or Richmond and follows it out to the M3 and round to Heathrow, or heads up to the M4 spur. Another option, depending on traffic, is through Wimbledon and Putney to the A4 and M4. It is about 16 miles.

On a normal day, that is 40 to 45 minutes. Weekday mornings around the A3 at Tolworth and New Malden, and the A316 approaching Twickenham, can add 15 minutes or more. On rugby match days at Twickenham Stadium, the A316 is best avoided altogether, and the driver will go another way.

The tube from Morden to Heathrow

Morden is on the Northern line, and Heathrow is on the Piccadilly and Elizabeth lines. To get between them, you change in central London, usually at Leicester Square or King's Cross for the Piccadilly line, or at Tottenham Court Road for the Elizabeth line. Door to door, that is typically an hour and twenty minutes or more, with a walk between platforms and no lifts at some stations.

For a solo traveller with a small bag and plenty of time, that works and saves money. With cases, children, older relatives or an early flight before the tube is running frequently, it becomes hard work. For two or three people, the fixed fare often comes close to the combined tube fares, and it is door to door.

Around SM4

SM4 covers Morden town centre around the station and London Road, the large St Helier estate to the south, Lower Morden and the streets towards Morden Park, and the edges of Merton Park. Morden Hall Park, the National Trust site on the River Wandle, is a short walk from the station and a familiar landmark for drivers.

The roads around the station and the Crown Lane junction are busy with buses, so if you are being collected from a flat on London Road, tell us the nearest side road where the driver can stop. On the St Helier estate, a house number and the name of the road is usually enough.

Which Heathrow terminal?

Heathrow has four working terminals in three locations: Terminals 2 and 3 in the central area, Terminal 5 on its own road at the western end, and Terminal 4 on the southern side, near the cargo area. Tell us your terminal when you book. Terminal 5 is home to most British Airways flights. If you are not sure, check your booking confirmation or the airline's website before you travel.

Heathrow's drop-off charges

Since January 2026, every entry to a Heathrow terminal drop-off zone has cost £7, with a strict ten-minute limit enforced by cameras. Overstay it, or forget to pay, and an £80 penalty notice follows, reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days. If a friend is dropping you off, the free option is the Long Stay car park, where the first 30 minutes cost nothing and a shuttle bus runs to the terminals.

Coming home to Morden

The return trip is the same fixed fare. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, and helps with your luggage to the car. If your flight is early or late, the pickup moves automatically, and the time it takes to clear passport control and collect bags is included.

Early departures

Many long-haul flights from Heathrow leave in the morning, and short-haul flights start before 7am. The first Northern line trains are not early enough to make a 6am check-in comfortable. For an early flight, a pickup around three hours before departure is a good rule of thumb for long-haul, and two and a half hours for short-haul. At that hour, the roads are clear and the drive is often under 35 minutes.

Families and groups

For families, an estate or MPV gives room for holiday luggage and a pushchair. Child seats are free. For groups of up to eight, the Volkswagen Multivan or the Mercedes V-Class takes everyone and their luggage in one vehicle.
