Bournemouth's own airport handles a handful of holiday routes, so for most long-haul and many European flights, people from Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch use Gatwick. That makes for a long journey home: just over a hundred miles across Surrey and Hampshire into Dorset. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Bournemouth costs from £219 for a saloon, fixed before you travel, with the driver waiting for you in arrivals.
Which way the driver goes
There are two sensible routes, and the driver will choose on the day. The usual one is the M23 north, the M25 to junction 12, then the M3 to Southampton, the M27 west and the A31 through the edge of the New Forest towards Ringwood, before turning south to Bournemouth. The other runs along the south coast on the A27 and joins the M27 near Portsmouth. It can be quicker at quiet times but is less predictable.
Either way, allow around two hours to two hours fifteen. The A31 between the M27 and Ringwood is single carriageway in places and gets slow on summer weekends and bank holidays, when everyone else is heading to the beaches too.
Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch addresses
We drop off across the whole conurbation. Bournemouth town centre, Westbourne, Boscombe and Southbourne are reached from the Wessex Way. For Poole and Sandbanks, the driver usually comes in from the A31 at Ferndown. Christchurch, Highcliffe and Mudeford are often quicker via the A338 or the A35.
The seafront hotels on the East and West Cliff are a common destination. Give us the hotel name and the driver will pull into the right entrance, which matters on the cliff-top roads where stopping is restricted.
Travelling with holiday luggage
Most Bournemouth passengers are coming home from a holiday, which means more bags than usual. A saloon takes two large cases and two smaller bags. If you are a couple with two big cases each, or a family with a pushchair, choose an estate or an MPV. The price for each vehicle is shown before you book, so there are no surprises when the bags come off the carousel.
What about the train?
You can get from Gatwick to Bournemouth by rail, usually changing at Clapham Junction for a South Western Railway service down the main line. It takes around three hours. From Bournemouth station many addresses still need a bus or a taxi.
For a single traveller with a backpack, that is fine. For a couple with holiday cases, or a family arriving in the evening, one car from the arrivals hall to the front door is a lot easier, and the fixed fare compares well against several train tickets plus a taxi from the station.
Late arrivals and early departures
Plenty of Gatwick flights land late in the evening, when the trains thin out and the connections stretch. We run at any hour and the fare does not change at night. For an early departure from Gatwick, we will suggest a pickup in the small hours that leaves sensible margin for the A31 and M3.
Included as standard
Meet and greet with a name board, flight tracking, free waiting time after landing and free child seats. Your driver will stop at a services on the way if you need one.
Gatwick's drop-off charge, and why it doesn't affect you
Since January 2026, anyone pulling into the forecourt drop-off zones at Gatwick pays £10 for the first ten minutes, then £1 a minute after that. Cameras read the plates and the charge is paid online by midnight the next day, with a £100 penalty if it is missed. If your family usually drives you to the airport, the free option is the Long Stay car park, where you get up to two hours free and a shuttle bus to the terminals.
Pre-booked private hire cars work differently. Your driver parks in the short-stay car park and meets you in arrivals, and the cost is covered by the fixed fare. There is nothing to pay at the airport.
A note on the New Forest stretch
The A31 crosses the northern edge of the New Forest between the M27 and Ringwood. Ponies, cattle and deer roam freely across unfenced roads here, and the speed limits are lower than people expect. Our drivers take it carefully, especially after dark. It is one of the reasons the journey takes a little longer than the mileage suggests, and one of the nicer parts of the drive in daylight.
Flying out again
For the return trip, the same fixed fare applies from your Bournemouth address to Gatwick. As a guide, allow around four hours before a long-haul departure and three and a half for short-haul, which covers the drive, bag drop and security with some margin. For very early flights, a pickup in the small hours means quiet roads and a quicker run.
