Sit down with any driver who's done this run a hundred times and he'll tell you the same thing. Richmond is one of the easier jobs out of Gatwick, but people still overpay for it because they book the first thing that pops up. A private taxi from Gatwick Airport to Richmond TW9 costs £69, fixed, and that price covers the whole car, not a per-head charge.

This page tells you exactly what that fare gets you, how long the drive actually takes, what Gatwick charges for dropping off at the terminal, and what your other options are if a taxi isn't quite right for your trip. Prices below are correct and updated as of September 2026.

What's included in your Gatwick to Richmond fare?

The £69 fare is for a standard saloon car, up to four passengers and their luggage, from your Gatwick terminal straight to your Richmond TW9 address. There's no meter running. No surprise card machine at the end of the ride. You book the price, and you pay the price.

A driver meets you inside the terminal or in the arrivals hall if you'd rather not carry bags through a car park. Flight tracking is standard, so a delayed landing doesn't cost you extra waiting time or a cancelled booking. If your party is bigger, or you've got golf clubs, prams or a stack of suitcases, ask for an estate or a larger vehicle when you book. The price adjusts for that, but it's still fixed in advance.

Gatwick has two terminals, North and South. Please inform your driver of your landing terminal when you book, as it affects the pickup point. South Terminal handles most easyJet and British Airways short-haul arrivals, North Terminal covers a lot of the long-haul and charter traffic.

Journey time from Gatwick Airport to Richmond TW9

Richmond TW9 sits roughly 30 miles from Gatwick, on the western side of London near the river. Most drivers take the M23 north to the M25, then pick up the A3 through Kingston and into Richmond, avoiding the worst of central London traffic entirely.

On a clear road, that's around 50 to 55 minutes. During rush hour, or a Friday evening when everyone's heading home at once, it can stretch to 70 or 75 minutes. Your driver will know the day's traffic and route around it where possible, but nobody can promise an exact minute count on the M25. It's the M25.

Richmond itself is a lovely spot to arrive into. You're a few minutes from Richmond Park, one of the largest green spaces in London, and Kew Gardens is just down the road too. If you're landing tired after a long flight, that's a nice run home, not a slog through gridlock.

Gatwick terminal drop-off charges and the free alternative

This bit trips a lot of people up, so it's worth being precise about it. Gatwick charges £10 for using the forecourt drop-off zone directly outside the terminal, and that covers 10 minutes. The price increased from £7 in January 2026, so if you recall a lower fare from a previous flight from Gatwick, that's the reason for the change.

There is a free alternative. Gatwick's Long Stay car park allows free drop-off, and you can stay there for up to two hours before any charge applies, with a shuttle bus running to the terminal. It takes longer than pulling straight up to the doors, but it costs nothing. Blue Badge holders are exempt from the forecourt charge altogether.

If you're booking a private taxi with us, none of this is your problem to manage. The fare already accounts for how your driver handles pickup and drop-off at the terminal. You don't need to work out payment for a forecourt charge yourself, your driver deals with that as part of the service.

Train and public transport options from Gatwick to Richmond

A taxi isn't always the right call, and it's worth being upfront about that. If you're travelling solo or as a pair with light luggage, and you're not in a rush, the train can work out cheaper.

The Gatwick Express runs from the airport to London Victoria in about 30 minutes. From Victoria, you'd need the District line or a South Western Railway service out to Richmond, which adds another 30 to 40 minutes plus the walk between platforms and any wait for a connection. All told, you're looking at somewhere between an hour and 15 minutes and an hour and a half, door to door, depending on connections.

There's also a Southern rail option changing at Clapham Junction, which some travellers find simpler since Clapham Junction has direct services onwards to Richmond on the Overground.

The maths on cost depends on how many of you are travelling. Train fares are charged per person, so for one or two people, the train can genuinely be the cheaper way to get home. For three or four people with luggage, the fixed taxi fare often beats buying that many individual train tickets, and it's a lot less hassle with bags on stairs and platform changes.

Private hire vs public transport for families and groups

Here's the honest version, not the sales pitch. If you're travelling with young kids, elderly parents, or anyone who struggles with stairs and platform changes, book the taxi. Door-to-door with no transfers is worth paying for when you've got people to look after, not just bags.

If you're arriving late at night, the same applies. Gatwick to Richmond by train after midnight gets complicated fast, with limited services and long waits. A taxi runs whenever your flight lands.

If it's just you, travelling light, landing at a sensible hour, and you don't mind a couple of changes, the train is a perfectly good option and it'll save you money. There's no need to book a private car every single time. We'd rather you knew that upfront than found out after paying more than you needed to.

For families or groups avoiding the hassle of connections altogether, a private hire minicab also makes sense even outside of peak flight times, simply because it removes the guesswork.

A bit about TW9 itself

Richmond TW9 covers a fair spread, from the town centre and station down towards Kew and the river. Drivers doing this route regularly know the difference between dropping someone by Richmond Green, taking you further out towards Kew Gardens, or heading up to the top of Richmond Hill where the views over the Thames are genuinely worth the detour on a clear evening.

Parking around Richmond town centre runs on a controlled parking zone, so don't expect to find a free space right outside your front door if you're being collected rather than dropped off. Most residential streets need a permit during the day. None of that affects your taxi drop-off though, your driver simply pulls up, helps with bags, and you're inside within a minute or two.

If you live near Kew Gardens or Richmond Park and you're heading to Gatwick for an early flight, the same fixed fare applies in reverse. Book the night before if you've got a flight before 6am, since traffic on the M25 is lightest then and you'll likely beat the estimated journey time comfortably.

Booking your taxi

Booking takes a couple of minutes. You'll need your flight number, terminal, and your Richmond TW9 address or postcode. Once it's booked, that's it. The price doesn't change, the driver tracks your flight, and you walk out to a car waiting for you.
