Sutton is one of the closest London boroughs to Gatwick, separated from the airport by the Surrey hills and a short run up the A217. It is close enough that people think about taking the train, and far enough that the train usually involves a change. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Sutton costs from £59 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and takes you from the arrivals hall to your door in around 35 to 40 minutes.

The route home

Most drivers take the M23 north to junction 7 on the M25, head west to junction 8, and then follow the A217 north over Reigate Hill, through Kingswood and Burgh Heath, and down past Belmont into Sutton. An alternative is the A23 north through Horley and Redhill, then the A217 or the B2230 through Banstead. The driver will choose based on the traffic.

It is around 16 miles. On a clear road, 35 to 40 minutes. The A217 through Burgh Heath and the Belmont area is the main slow point in the morning and evening rush hours, along with the town centre's one-way system. Late evening arrivals are usually quicker.

Around the borough

We drop off across the SM postcodes: Sutton town centre and the High Street, Cheam Village and North Cheam, Belmont and the hospital area, Carshalton and Carshalton Beeches, Wallington, Hackbridge and Worcester Park on the borough's northern edge. The Royal Marsden Hospital and St Helier Hospital are both in the borough; if you are travelling for treatment, tell us which entrance you need.

Sutton High Street is pedestrianised, so for flats above shops the driver will stop on a nearby side road. Most residential streets have easy kerbside access, though some in Cheam and Belmont have controlled parking during the day, which does not affect a quick drop-off.

Train or taxi from Gatwick?

There is no direct train from Gatwick to Sutton. Most routes change at East Croydon or Redhill, and some go via Epsom. With good connections, the journey takes around 45 minutes to an hour. Sutton station is at the bottom of the High Street, and many homes are a bus ride or a walk up the hill away.

For one person with a small bag, the train works out cheaper. With luggage, children or older relatives, or after a long-haul flight, the door-to-door car is much easier. With three or four people, the fixed fare is often close to the combined train fares.

There is also a bus

The X26 express bus links Sutton with Kingston and Heathrow, not Gatwick, so it is useful if you are flying from Heathrow instead. For Gatwick, there is no direct bus from Sutton.

Gatwick drop-off charges and the free option

If a friend is driving you back to Gatwick for your next flight, the forecourt drop-off zones cost £10 for the first ten minutes since January 2026, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. Cameras read the plate, and the charge is paid online by midnight the next day, with a £100 penalty if missed. The free option is the Long Stay car park, which allows up to two hours free with a shuttle bus. Blue Badge holders are exempt. With a pre-booked taxi, our fixed fare covers all of that.

Meet and greet

Your driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board and walks you to the car. At Gatwick, private hire cars park in the short-stay car park, a few minutes from arrivals. If your flight is late, the pickup moves at no extra cost.

Heading out to Gatwick

The fixed fare works both ways. We usually suggest leaving Sutton around two and a quarter hours before a short-haul departure, and two and three quarter hours before long-haul. For early flights, the A217 is quiet and the trip is often under half an hour.

Choosing your vehicle

A saloon takes up to four people and two large cases. An estate gives more room for holiday luggage. Six- and eight-seat MPVs take families and small groups, and for bigger groups we can send two vehicles.

Hospital visits and treatment trips

Sutton has two major hospitals, and we carry a lot of patients and visiting family members from Gatwick. The Royal Marsden in Belmont is one of the world's leading cancer hospitals, and many patients fly in from overseas for treatment. St Helier, on the borough's northern edge, is the local general hospital. If you are travelling for treatment, let us know any mobility needs or equipment in advance, and choose an estate or MPV if you need extra room. The driver will take you to the entrance you need rather than the main car park.

What to have ready when you book

Give us your flight number and terminal, the full address with postcode, a mobile number that works when you land, and the number of large cases. For hospital drop-offs, add the department or entrance. If you are being collected from a block of flats, tell us the entrance or concierge arrangements.
