Royal Tunbridge Wells is only around 30 miles east of Gatwick, but there is no motorway between them, and the trains go the long way round. That makes the car the natural choice for most people heading home from the airport. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Tunbridge Wells costs from £79 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and the driver will be waiting in arrivals with your name on a board.

The cross-country route

From Gatwick, the driver usually heads east on the A264 through East Grinstead, then follows the A264 on to Langton Green and into Tunbridge Wells from the west. It is a pleasant drive through the High Weald, with rolling farmland and patches of ancient woodland, but it is mostly single carriageway, which is why 30 miles takes 45 minutes or more.

The slow spots are East Grinstead at rush hour, where the A22 crosses the A264, and the approach to Tunbridge Wells itself in the afternoon school run. Late evening arrivals are usually much quicker.

Tunbridge Wells and the villages around it

We drop off across the TN1 to TN4 postcodes: the town centre around the Pantiles and Mount Pleasant, the grand villas of the Calverley and Broadwater Down areas, St John's and Southborough to the north, and Rusthall and Langton Green to the west. We also cover the villages beyond: Pembury, Frant, Groombridge, Speldhurst, Matfield and Crowborough on the Sussex side.

For the Pantiles and the older lanes in the centre, some streets are narrow or restricted, so the driver will stop at the nearest convenient point. If you live down an unmade lane or private road, tell us when you book.

Train or taxi?

There is no direct train from Gatwick to Tunbridge Wells. Most rail journeys go via Redhill and Tonbridge, or via London, with at least one change. Expect an hour and a half or more door to door. For a solo traveller with light luggage, it is a cheaper choice if the connections line up.

For everyone else, the drive is shorter, and with two or more passengers the fixed fare starts to compare well with the train. After a long-haul flight, avoiding two changes with cases is usually worth the difference.

Drop-off charges at Gatwick

When you head back to Gatwick, keep in mind that the forecourt drop-off zones outside both terminals cost £10 for the first ten minutes since January 2026, rising by £1 a minute to a maximum of thirty minutes. The charge is camera-enforced and paid online. If a friend is giving you a lift, the free Long Stay car park allows up to two hours with a shuttle bus to the terminal. If you book a taxi with us, the fare covers the drop-off.

Early flights from Tunbridge Wells

Because the route is all A-roads, early mornings are the quickest time to make the trip. For a 6am departure, a pickup at around 3.30am is typical, which gets you to Gatwick in plenty of time for bag drop and security. We will confirm a pickup time when you book, based on your flight and terminal.

What's included

Meet and greet in the arrivals hall, flight tracking, free waiting time after landing, and free child seats on request. The fare is fixed for the whole car, whatever the traffic on the A264.

A little about the town

Tunbridge Wells grew up around a chalybeate spring discovered in the early 1600s, and it became a fashionable spa resort in Georgian times. The colonnaded Pantiles, where visitors once took the waters, is still the most photographed corner of town, with cafés and independent shops under the old walkway. The Royal title came from Edward VII in 1909. Today it is a commuter and market town with a busy centre around the Royal Victoria Place shopping centre and Calverley Grounds, and some of the finest Victorian villas in Kent spread across the hills.

For drivers, that history means narrow streets in the old town, a few one-way loops and some steep roads, especially around Mount Ephraim and the Common. Our drivers know where to stop without blocking anyone.

Meeting your driver at Gatwick

Once you have collected your bags and walked through customs, your driver is in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. Gatwick asks private hire drivers to park in the short-stay car parks, so it is a few minutes' walk to the car, and the driver will help with the trolley. Tell us whether you are landing at North or South Terminal, since the two are a few miles apart by road and connected by a shuttle train for passengers inside the airport.

If you land early, the driver is already there. If you land late, we have adjusted the pickup. Either way, you do not need to call us unless you are held up in customs for a long time.
