Wivelsfield is one of those places with a name that confuses people. Wivelsfield village and Wivelsfield Green are rural communities in Mid Sussex, in the RH17 postcode, south-east of Haywards Heath. Wivelsfield railway station, on the other hand, is a couple of miles away on the edge of Burgess Hill, in a different postcode. That matters when you are planning a trip to Gatwick. A taxi from Wivelsfield RH17 to Gatwick Airport costs from £59 for a saloon, fixed at booking, collected from your door.
Getting to Gatwick from the village
From Wivelsfield Green, the driver usually heads north-west to Haywards Heath and joins the A272 west to Bolney, then the A23 north past Handcross and onto the M23 into Gatwick. An alternative goes through Burgess Hill to the A23 at Hickstead. It is about 17 miles.
On a clear road, it takes 30 to 35 minutes. The roads through Haywards Heath and the A272 at Bolney are the usual slow spots at rush hour and school times. The country lanes around the village are narrow and winding, so the first few minutes are slower than the mileage suggests. For early flights, the roads are quiet.
Around Wivelsfield and RH17
RH17 is a large, rural postcode. Around Wivelsfield, it covers the village itself, the larger village of Wivelsfield Green, and the hamlets and farms around Ditchling Common and Fox Hill. Elsewhere, RH17 includes Cuckfield, Ansty, Bolney, Handcross, Balcombe, Ardingly and Scaynes Hill. Many properties have names rather than numbers and are down private drives or lanes. Add the property name and a what3words reference or directions when you book.
The station confusion
Wivelsfield station is in Burgess Hill, on the Brighton main line, and it has direct trains to Gatwick in around 20 minutes. It is a good option if you live in Burgess Hill near the station. From Wivelsfield Green, though, the station is a drive away, and there is no practical walking route with luggage, so most people from the village need a car to the station anyway. At that point, the car all the way to Gatwick is often the simpler choice.
What your fixed fare covers
The £59 fare is for a saloon carrying up to four passengers, with two large cases and two smaller bags, from your RH17 address to North or South Terminal. It is agreed at booking and does not change on the day. Larger vehicles are available at their own fixed prices.
Gatwick's drop-off charges
If a neighbour is driving you to Gatwick, warn them about the charges. Since January 2026, the forecourt drop-off zones outside North and South Terminal have cost £10 for the first ten minutes, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. Cameras log the number plate and payment is due online by midnight the next day, with a £100 penalty for missing it. The free option is the Long Stay car park, which allows up to two hours with a shuttle bus. Blue Badge holders are exempt. Our fixed fare already includes it, so there is nothing to pay at the kerb.
Timing your pickup
As a guide, leave Wivelsfield about two and a quarter hours before a short-haul flight and two and three quarter hours before long-haul. Your confirmation will include a recommended pickup time.
Coming home
The same fixed fare applies from Gatwick to Wivelsfield. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board and helps with your luggage. A late flight costs you nothing extra.
Ditchling Common and the countryside
Wivelsfield sits on the edge of Ditchling Common, with the South Downs rising behind Ditchling to the south. It is a beautiful part of Sussex, but the lanes are narrow and dark at night, and some properties are well off the road. Our drivers are used to these roads and will take care, especially in the early morning. If your home is hard to find, add a note to your booking.
Families and holiday luggage
For families, an estate takes four large cases, and an MPV takes six passengers with their bags. Child seats are free; give us the ages when you book.
Coming home late
If your flight lands late in the evening, there is no practical public transport back to Wivelsfield Green. A pre-booked car is waiting whatever time you land, and the fixed fare is the same at night.
