Virginia Water is a Heathrow kind of place. The airport is only a few miles away, and most locals use it for long-haul trips. But plenty of holiday flights and budget routes go from Gatwick, and when they do, the drive is right round the south-west quarter of the M25. A taxi from Virginia Water GU25 to Gatwick Airport costs from £79 for a saloon, fixed at booking, collected from your door and taken straight to North or South Terminal.
Round the M25 from junction 13
Virginia Water sits between junctions 12 and 13 of the M25, which makes the route simple. The driver joins the motorway and heads clockwise past the M3 and A3 interchanges to junction 7, then takes the M23 south to Gatwick. Around 30 miles in total.
On a quiet road that is 35 to 45 minutes. The section around junction 10, where the A3 crosses the M25 at Wisley, is notorious for congestion, and roadworks on that interchange have made it slower than ever at peak times. Weekday mornings between 7am and 9.30am and late afternoons can push the journey towards an hour. For early flights, the roads are usually clear and the trip is quicker than the estimate.
Picking up around Virginia Water
GU25 is a quiet, spread-out postcode. The village centre around the station and Station Approach is compact, but many homes are on large private estates, most famously the Wentworth Estate around the golf club, where roads are private and some have gates or security. If you live on a private estate, tell us the gate code or how the driver should announce their arrival. On some of the longer drives, the driver will come right up to the house to load luggage.
We also cover the edges of the postcode towards Englefield Green, Trumps Green, Thorpe and the Callow Hill area. If you are collected from a house with no number, give us the name and a nearby landmark, such as the junction with the A30 or the entrance to Virginia Water Lake.
Timing your pickup
As a guide, we suggest leaving Virginia Water about two and a half hours before a short-haul Gatwick departure and three hours before a long-haul one. That allows for the M25 plus bag drop and security. If you are flying at a busy time, such as the start of the school holidays, add another half hour. We will confirm a recommended pickup time when you book.
What about the train?
Virginia Water has its own station on the South Western Railway line between Waterloo and Reading, but there is no simple way to Gatwick by rail. You would need at least two changes, usually via Clapham Junction or by going round through Woking and Guildford to join the Great Western service that runs to the airport. Expect around an hour and three quarters to two hours.
For most people, especially with luggage, the car is the obvious choice from here. With two or more travellers, the fixed fare often comes in below the combined train fares, without any changes.
Gatwick's drop-off charges
If you are thinking of getting a lift from a neighbour, it helps to know the costs at the airport. Since January 2026, Gatwick has charged £10 for the first ten minutes in the forecourt drop-off zones outside both terminals, rising by £1 a minute up to a maximum of thirty minutes. Cameras log the number plate and the charge is due online by midnight the next day, or a £100 penalty follows.
The free alternative is the Long Stay car park, where drop-off is free for up to two hours with a shuttle bus to the terminal. Blue Badge holders are exempt. With a pre-booked taxi, the fixed fare covers the drop-off and you will not be asked to pay anything at the kerb.
Coming home to Virginia Water
We also collect from Gatwick for the trip home at the same fixed fare. Give us your return flight number and terminal. Your driver will track the flight, wait in arrivals with a name board and help with the luggage to the car. If the flight is delayed, there is no extra charge.
Choosing your vehicle
A saloon takes up to four passengers with two large cases. For golf trips with clubs, ski holidays or a family with a pushchair, an estate or MPV is the safer choice. For business travel, the executive saloon or the electric BMW i7 gives a quieter, more comfortable ride round the motorway.
