Southampton has its own small airport, but most long-haul and many holiday flights for the city still go through Gatwick. That leaves a 75 mile gap to cover after landing, often with a full set of luggage. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Southampton costs from £159 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and takes you to any address in the city, the university or the cruise terminals in the docks.
Two ways to drive it
Drivers choose between two routes depending on the day. The motorway route goes north on the M23, round the M25 to junction 12, then down the M3 to Southampton. It is longer in miles but usually the steadiest. The coastal route goes down the A23 and along the A27 through Chichester and Havant, picking up the M27 into the city. It can be quicker late at night and on quiet weekday middays, but the A27 near Arundel and Chichester is unpredictable in summer.
Either way, plan on around an hour and twenty to thirty-five minutes in normal traffic. The driver will check conditions before you leave the airport and take the faster option.
Cruise passengers heading to the docks
Southampton is the UK's busiest cruise port, with several terminals spread around the Eastern and Western Docks. If you are flying into Gatwick to join a ship, tell us the ship name and terminal when you book. Ships move between terminals, and the drop-off for one can be a long walk from another.
Cruise check-in usually works on an allocated arrival time. If your flight lands early in the morning and your boarding window is in the afternoon, there is no need to rush. We can take a slower route, stop for breakfast, or wait while you have a coffee in the city. If the timing is tight, we leave as soon as you are through arrivals.
University and city addresses
Students and visiting families make up a lot of our Southampton bookings, particularly at the start and end of term. The University of Southampton's main Highfield campus is north of the city centre, with halls spread across Swaythling, Bassett and Portswood. Solent University is in the city centre near the Guildhall. Give us the hall name and block, and the driver will find the right entrance.
For homes in Shirley, Bitterne, Woolston, Sholing or Portswood, the postcode is usually enough, though a house name or a nearby landmark helps on some of the older terraced streets.
The train from Gatwick to Southampton
Rail is possible, but it is not a direct trip. Most routes involve a change, either at Clapham Junction for a South Western Railway train down to Southampton Central, or along the south coast via Barnham or Havant. Allow around two to two and a half hours.
For a single traveller with a rucksack and an open afternoon, the train is cheaper. With cruise luggage, children, or a late-night landing, the direct car is usually the better choice. Four people on train tickets plus a taxi at Southampton Central will often cost close to the fixed fare.
What is included
The fixed fare covers the car, the driver, flight tracking, meet and greet in the Gatwick arrivals hall, and the drop-off at your destination. If your flight is delayed, the pickup moves with it at no extra cost. Child seats are free.
For cruise luggage we usually suggest an estate or MPV even for two people. Families and groups can choose six or eight seat vehicles.
Gatwick charges if you're being collected privately
If a friend or family member is collecting you rather than booking a car, it is worth warning them about Gatwick's forecourt charges. Since January 2026, the drop-off zones outside both terminals cost £10 for ten minutes, then £1 a minute up to half an hour. Plates are read by camera and payment is due online by midnight the next day. The free Long Stay car park allows up to two hours with a shuttle bus. Pre-booked taxis meet you in the short-stay car parks, and the fixed fare covers the cost.
The Hythe and Waterside question
If your address is on the Waterside, in Hythe, Dibden Purlieu, Holbury or Fawley, the drive continues round the head of Southampton Water through Totton and Marchwood. It adds miles and time, so enter your exact address for an accurate fixed price. We have a separate guide for SO45 and the Waterside.
Your trip back to Gatwick
The same fixed fare applies from Southampton to Gatwick. For long-haul departures we suggest leaving around three and a half to four hours before take-off. If you are flying out after a cruise, tell us the ship's arrival time and we will collect you from the terminal once you are through disembarkation.
