For people in Totton, Marchwood and the forest villages of SO40, Heathrow is usually the long-haul airport. But many holiday and budget flights go from Gatwick, and the drive there is a different proposition: around 80 miles, either along the south coast or round the M25. A taxi from Southampton SO40 to Gatwick costs from £169 for a saloon, fixed at booking, collected from your door. For Heathrow, see our guide to SO40 to Heathrow.
Coast road or motorway?
There are two sensible routes. The coastal route takes the M27 east past Southampton and Portsmouth, then the A27 through Chichester, Arundel and Worthing to the A23 at Brighton, and north on the A23 and M23 to Gatwick. The motorway route takes the M27 to the M3, north to the M25 at junction 12, then clockwise to the M23. Both are around 80 to 85 miles.
The coastal route is often quicker at quiet times, but the A27 near Chichester and Arundel can be very slow on summer weekends and at rush hour. The M3 and M25 route is more predictable but has its own bottleneck at the A3 junction. The driver will check conditions and pick the faster one. Plan on an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters.
Across SO40
SO40 covers Totton and its neighbourhoods of Calmore, Testwood and Hounsdown; Marchwood on the shore of Southampton Water; and the forest-edge villages of Ashurst, Woodlands, Netley Marsh, Cadnam and Copythorne. In the forest villages, ponies and cattle roam on unfenced roads, so drivers take extra care, especially in the dark. For rural properties, add the property name and a what3words reference.
Public transport from SO40 to Gatwick
There is no simple rail link. From Totton or Ashurst, trains run to Southampton Central, and from there you can travel along the south coast with changes, or via Clapham Junction. Either way, expect around two and a half to three hours. For a solo traveller with light luggage, it is cheaper. For families or anyone with an early flight, the car is much simpler.
Gatwick's drop-off charges
If someone is driving you to Gatwick, they should know that Gatwick has charged £10 for the first ten minutes in its forecourt drop-off zones since January 2026, rising by £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. Cameras log the plate and payment is due online by midnight the next day. The free option is the Long Stay car park, which allows two hours with a shuttle bus. None of that applies to a pre-booked transfer, because the fare already covers it.
Timing your pickup
As a guide, leave SO40 around three and a half hours before a short-haul Gatwick flight and four hours before long-haul. On summer weekends, add extra time for the A27. For early flights, the roads are clear and the trip is quicker.
Coming home
The same fixed fare applies from Gatwick to SO40. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board and helps with your bags. If your flight is delayed, there is no extra charge.
Families and holiday luggage
Holiday flights mean holiday luggage. A saloon takes two large cases; an estate takes four; an MPV takes six passengers with their bags. Child seats are free. For a bigger family group, the eight-seat MPV keeps everyone together.
Late arrivals into Gatwick
Many holiday flights land at Gatwick late in the evening, and by then the trains back to Southampton and Totton are thinning out, with long waits for connections. A pre-booked car is waiting whatever time you land, and the fixed fare is the same at night. The A27 and the M27 are quiet late at night, and the drive home is often quicker than the daytime estimate.
What to tell us when you book
Give us the flight number and terminal, the full SO40 address with postcode, the number of passengers and cases, and any directions for rural properties. If you want to stop on the way, perhaps to drop someone in Southampton or Chichester, add it and the fixed price includes it.
Booking for visitors
If you are booking for a relative or guest arriving at Gatwick, add their name and mobile number. The driver will meet them in arrivals with a name board and bring them to your door.
