Norwich has a small airport of its own, but for most long-haul and many European flights, people from Norfolk end up flying from one of the London airports. When that airport is Gatwick, home is about 150 miles away on the other side of London. A taxi from Gatwick Airport to Norwich costs from £299 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and gets you from the arrivals hall to your front door without a single change of train.

Crossing London the quick way

The driver takes the M23 north and the M25 clockwise round the eastern side of London, crossing the Thames at the Dartford Crossing, then joins the M11 north at junction 27. From the M11, the A11 runs north-east through Thetford Forest straight to Norwich. It is dual carriageway the whole way now, which has made this route far more reliable than it used to be.

Plan on two and three quarter hours to three hours without stops. The Dartford Crossing is the usual bottleneck, especially at rush hour and on Friday afternoons. If it is badly congested, the driver may go anticlockwise round the western side of the M25 instead, which is longer but sometimes faster. The Dartford charge is included in your fare.

Stopping on the way

Three hours is a long time after a flight. Your driver will stop whenever you need a break, and Birchanger Green near Stansted on the M11 or the services at Barton Mills on the A11 make convenient halfway points. With young children, it is worth planning a stop in advance.

Norwich and the rest of Norfolk

We drop off anywhere in the city: the centre around the market and the castle, the Golden Triangle, Eaton, Thorpe St Andrew, Hellesdon and the university at Earlham. The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is on the south-west edge of the city, close to the A11, so it is quick to reach.

We also go beyond Norwich to Wymondham, Dereham, Aylsham, the Broads, Cromer, Sheringham and the north Norfolk coast. Those add miles, so enter your exact address for an accurate fixed price.

Travelling by train instead

The rail route from Gatwick to Norwich runs through London. Thameslink takes you into the city, you cross to Liverpool Street, and Greater Anglia trains run from there to Norwich. With good connections, it takes around three hours or a little more.

For a solo traveller with light luggage, the train is usually cheaper. With a family, holiday luggage or a late-evening landing, crossing London is the hard part, and the fixed fare split between three or four passengers starts to look reasonable.

Gatwick drop-off charges for the trip back

If a relative is driving you back to Gatwick, they should know about the forecourt charge: £10 for the first ten minutes since January 2026, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes, enforced by cameras. The free Long Stay car park allows up to two hours with a shuttle bus. With a pre-booked taxi, the fixed fare covers the drop-off and you will not pay anything at the airport.

Picking the right car for three hours

On a long journey, space matters more than on a city run. A saloon is fine for one or two people with a couple of cases. An estate or MPV gives a family more room and keeps the luggage out of the way. Business travellers often prefer the executive saloon or Mercedes V-Class, which are quieter for calls.

Late arrivals and overnight runs

A lot of long-haul flights land at Gatwick in the evening, and by the time you are through passport control the trains back to Norfolk are thinning out. That is when the car really earns its fare. We run around the clock, the price does not go up at night, and the roads are quieter, so a late run home is often quicker than the daytime estimate. Your driver will keep the car warm and quiet if you want to sleep on the way.

For very early departures from Gatwick, the same applies in reverse. A pickup from Norwich at 1am or 2am gets you to the airport for a 6am flight without the stress of the first train, which would not get you there in time anyway.

What to tell us when you book

Give us your flight number and terminal, the full Norfolk address with postcode, a mobile number that will work when you land, and how many large cases you are bringing. If you are going somewhere rural, such as a farmhouse down a long track or a holiday cottage on the Broads, add a note with directions or a what3words address. Norfolk has some beautifully remote corners that satnav does not always find first time.

If part of your group is getting out earlier, for example in Thetford or Attleborough, add that as a stop and the fare includes it.

Students at the University of East Anglia

The University of East Anglia sits on the western edge of Norwich at Earlham, and many international students arrive through Gatwick at the start of term. The campus has several drop-off points depending on which residence you are in. Give us the residence name and we will take you to the right one. With a year's worth of luggage, choose an estate or MPV.
