The drive into the city

The driver takes the M23 and A23 north through Croydon and Streatham, then usually cuts across through Brixton and the Elephant and Castle, or along the Old Kent Road, to reach Tower Bridge Road. For the north bank, the driver crosses the bridge itself. It is about 30 miles.

Plan on an hour to an hour and twenty minutes. Most of that time is spent in the last ten miles, where traffic, traffic lights and bus lanes slow everything down. Tower Bridge itself closes to traffic when it lifts for passing ships, which happens several times a week, usually for ten minutes or so. If a lift is scheduled, the driver will use London Bridge instead.

Hotels and apartments around the bridge

• On the north bank, the hotels near the Tower of London and St Katharine Docks are reached via Tower Hill and East Smithfield. Some are on private or restricted roads inside the dock estate.
• On the south bank, Shad Thames is a cobbled, narrow street of old warehouses converted into flats and restaurants, with limited access for cars. The driver will stop at the nearest convenient point.
• Around London Bridge and the Shard, hotels are on busy streets with bus lanes, and the driver will use the hotel's set-down area.

The train from Gatwick

There is an excellent train for this trip, and it would be wrong not to mention it. Thameslink runs directly from Gatwick to London Bridge station in about half an hour, and Tower Bridge is a ten to fifteen-minute walk from there. Southern trains run to London Bridge too.

For a solo traveller or a couple with light luggage, the train is quicker and cheaper. Where the car makes sense is with heavy luggage, children, a late-night arrival or after a long-haul flight, when the walk from London Bridge station through the crowds with cases is the last thing you want.

Congestion Charge and ULEZ

Tower Bridge and the City are inside the central London Congestion Charge zone and the Ultra Low Emission Zone. Our vehicles meet ULEZ standards. If the Congestion Charge applies to your journey time, we will confirm it when you book, so you know the full price in advance.

Meet and greet at Gatwick

Your driver tracks your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, then walks you to the car in the short-stay car park. Delays move the pickup time automatically, at no cost to you. For business travellers, the executive saloon gives a quieter, more comfortable ride into the City.

Gatwick's drop-off charges

If someone drives you back to Gatwick for your flight home, the forecourt drop-off zones have cost £10 for the first ten minutes since January 2026, then £1 a minute up to thirty minutes. With a pre-booked car from your hotel, the fixed fare covers it.

Visiting the Tower and the riverside

The area around Tower Bridge is one of the busiest tourist areas in London, with the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge exhibition, HMS Belfast and Borough Market all within a short walk. Arriving with luggage in the middle of the day means navigating crowds, so we drop you as close to your hotel door as the roads allow. If your room is not ready, many hotels will hold bags while you explore.
