Portsmouth International Port is the departure point for ferries to Normandy, Brittany, northern Spain and the Channel Islands, and it welcomes a growing number of cruise ships too. Many of the people boarding there have flown into Heathrow, whether they are international visitors heading to France or Spain by sea, or UK residents flying in from elsewhere. A taxi from Heathrow Airport to Portsmouth International Port costs from £159 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and takes you from the arrivals hall to the terminal building.
The A3 to the coast
From Heathrow, the driver takes the M25 clockwise to junction 10, then the A3 south-west past Guildford, through the Hindhead Tunnel, and on to Petersfield and the A3(M). The A3(M) joins the A27 near Havant, and the M275 brings you into Portsmouth to the port entrance. It is around 75 miles.
On a clear road, the drive takes about an hour and twenty to thirty minutes. The M25 junction 10 at Wisley, where the A3 crosses, is a common bottleneck, and the A3 through Guildford can be slow at rush hour. The alternative is the M3 and M27, which the driver may use if the A3 is congested.
Where the port is
The International Port is at the northern end of Portsmouth Harbour, at the end of the M275 motorway, not near Portsmouth Harbour station or Gunwharf Quays. There is a dedicated passenger drop-off right outside the terminal building. Foot passengers check in inside the terminal, and coaches take them out to the ship.
If your ticket is for the Isle of Wight car ferry or the Gosport ferry, those leave from different places, so tell us when you book.
Check-in times for foot passengers
Ferry operators set their own check-in deadlines, and they vary by route and sailing, so check your ticket. Overnight sailings to Spain and France often have earlier deadlines than you might expect. Tell us your sailing time and operator when you book and we will suggest a Heathrow pickup that leaves plenty of margin.
If your flight lands the evening before an early sailing, staying near the port is less stressful than a late drive. We can drop you at a Portsmouth hotel and collect you in the morning, both at fixed prices.
Space for ferry and cruise luggage
People heading off on a ferry or cruise often travel heavier than they would on a flight. A saloon takes two large cases. Couples with more luggage should choose an estate, and families an MPV. We can carry bikes on request in a suitable vehicle; mention them when you book.
Heathrow terminals and meet and greet
Tell us your Heathrow terminal when you book. Terminals 2 and 3 are central, Terminal 5 is at the western end, and Terminal 4 is on the southern side. Your driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with a name board. If you are delayed, the pickup moves automatically, and passport control and baggage time is included.
Heathrow's drop-off rules for your return
On your way home, if someone drives you to Heathrow, they will pay £7 to enter a terminal forecourt, with a ten-minute limit and an £80 penalty for overstaying since January 2026. The free option is the Long Stay car park, which gives 30 minutes free. If you book with us, the fixed fare covers it.
By coach or train
National Express runs coaches from Heathrow to Portsmouth, and by rail you can take the RailAir coach to Woking and then a South Western Railway train to Portsmouth. Either way, you will still need a taxi from the coach station or Portsmouth Harbour to the International Port, which is not within walking distance with luggage. Total journey time is usually two and a half hours or more.
Travelling on to France or Spain
For many international visitors, the ferry is part of a longer journey: a flight into Heathrow, a sailing to Caen, Cherbourg, St Malo, Le Havre, Santander or Bilbao, and then onward travel on the other side. If your plans are tight, build in some slack. A delayed flight, a slow A3 and an early check-in deadline can combine badly. Booking a night in Portsmouth, and a fixed-price transfer in the morning, takes the risk out of the day.
Booking for a group
Groups of cyclists, walkers and friends often travel together by ferry. An eight-seat MPV takes everyone and their luggage in one vehicle, with a single fixed price for the whole group. If you are bringing bikes, tell us how many when you book so we can send a suitable vehicle.
