Straight up the A3

From Waterlooville, the driver joins the A3(M) at junction 3 or 4, heads north past Horndean onto the A3, and follows it through Petersfield, the Hindhead Tunnel, Guildford and on to the M25 at junction 10. From there, it is a short run clockwise to Heathrow. It is about 65 miles.

On a normal day, that is an hour and ten to twenty minutes. The A3 through Guildford and the M25 junction 10 at Wisley are the usual bottlenecks, especially on weekday mornings. For early flights, the A3 is clear and the trip is often quicker. If the A3 is badly blocked, the driver may use the M27 and M3 instead.

Around PO7

PO7 covers Waterlooville town centre and the London Road precinct, the large residential areas of Purbrook, Widley and Crookhorn on the slopes of Portsdown Hill, Wecock Farm and Stakes, and the village of Denmead to the north-west. The new developments at West of Waterlooville, on the edge of Denmead, are also in PO7, and some roads there are not yet on every satnav. Add a landmark if your home is new.

Denmead has many properties on country lanes; a house name and directions or a what3words reference help the driver find you first time.

The public transport alternative

There is no railway station in Waterlooville. The nearest stations are Havant, Cosham and Bedhampton. From Havant, trains run up the Portsmouth Direct line towards Guildford and Woking, where the RailAir coach connects to Heathrow. National Express coaches also run from Portsmouth to Heathrow. With connections, plan on two to two and a half hours.

For one person with light luggage, that is cheaper. For families, older travellers, or anyone with an early long-haul flight, the A3 by car is much simpler.

Heathrow terminals and drop-off charges

Heathrow's four terminals are in three places: 2 and 3 in the centre, 5 at the western end with its own road, and 4 on the southern side. Tell us your terminal when you book. Since January 2026, every entry to a terminal drop-off zone has cost £7, with a ten-minute limit and an £80 penalty notice for overstaying, cut to £40 if paid within 14 days. The free option for friends is the Long Stay car park, which gives 30 minutes free. With a pre-booked transfer, the fixed fare covers it.

Timing your pickup

As a guide, leave Waterlooville three and a half hours before a long-haul departure and three hours before short-haul. For early flights, a pickup in the small hours gets you to Heathrow on empty roads. We will confirm the time when you book.

Coming home to PO7

The same fixed fare applies from Heathrow to Waterlooville. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board, and drives you home. If your flight is delayed, there is no extra charge.

Naval families

Many people in Waterlooville and Purbrook are connected to the Royal Navy in Portsmouth, and service personnel often fly through Heathrow for deployments and postings. If you have a lot of kit, choose an estate or MPV and mention it when you book.

Passing through the Hindhead Tunnel

One of the reasons the A3 is so much better than it used to be is the Hindhead Tunnel, which opened in 2011 and took the road under the Devil's Punch Bowl instead of through the village traffic lights. It cut a notorious bottleneck from the journey, and now the run from Petersfield to Guildford is usually steady. The tunnel occasionally closes overnight for maintenance, in which case the driver will follow the signed diversion or use the M3.

Families and holiday luggage

For long-haul holidays, a saloon may not be big enough. An estate takes four large cases; an MPV takes six passengers with their bags. Child seats are free. For a group travelling together, the eight-seat MPV keeps everyone in one vehicle at one fixed price.
