From the Hamble to the M3

Most of SO31 is close to the M27 at junction 8 or 9. From there, the driver heads east or west to junction 4, then north on the M3 past Winchester and Basingstoke to the M25 at junction 12, and clockwise round to Heathrow. It is about 70 miles.

On a normal day, the trip takes an hour and a quarter to an hour and twenty-five minutes. The local roads to the M27, particularly the A27 through Sarisbury and Park Gate and Hamble Lane, are busy at rush hour. The M3 is usually steady, and the M25 near Heathrow is the final variable.

Around SO31

• Hamble-le-Rice: the old village on the river, with narrow lanes, marinas and the ferry to Warsash.
• Netley: the Royal Victoria Country Park, the abbey ruins, and houses along the shore.
• Bursledon and Lowford: boatyards and riverside homes on the Hamble.
• Locks Heath, Park Gate and Sarisbury Green: large residential areas with plenty of cul-de-sacs.
• Warsash: the village at the mouth of the river, with its waterfront and the passenger ferry across to Hamble.

Hamble Lane can be very busy, and the village itself has narrow streets with limited parking. If you are collected from a house near the waterfront, tell us about any tight turns, especially if you have booked a larger vehicle.

Sailors and maritime professionals

The area is home to many people who work at sea or in the marine industry, with its long history of shipbuilding, yacht racing and merchant navy training. Crew travelling to and from ships around the world often fly through Heathrow with heavy kit. Choose an estate or MPV if you have sea bags, and tell us when you book. We can invoice shipping companies and manning agencies directly.

Public transport

Hamble, Netley, Bursledon and Swanwick have stations on the line to Southampton and Fareham. From there, South Western Railway trains run towards Woking, where the RailAir coach connects to Heathrow. National Express also runs coaches from Southampton to Heathrow. With connections, plan on two to two and a half hours.

For one person travelling light, that is cheaper. For families or anyone with heavy luggage and an early flight, the car from the door is much easier.

Heathrow terminals and drop-off charges

Tell us your terminal when you book: 2 and 3 are central, 5 is at the western end and 4 is on the southern side. Since January 2026, every entry to a terminal drop-off zone has cost £7, with a ten-minute limit and an £80 penalty notice for overstaying, halved if paid within 14 days. The free option for friends is the Long Stay car park, with 30 minutes free. With us, the fixed fare covers it.

Timing your pickup

As a guide, leave SO31 around three and a half hours before a long-haul departure. For early flights, the roads are quiet and the trip is quicker. Your confirmation will include a recommended pickup time.

Coming home

The same fixed fare applies from Heathrow to SO31. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board and helps with your bags.

Regatta weeks and summer weekends

In summer, the Hamble is one of the busiest stretches of water on the south coast, and the roads into the villages get busy too, especially around regattas and on sunny weekends, when visitors head for the marinas and pubs. Hamble Lane in particular can queue. If you are flying out on a summer weekend, we will suggest a slightly earlier pickup. Flying home into Heathrow on those days, the driver will plan a route in that avoids the worst of it.

What to tell us when you book

Give us your flight number and terminal, the full address with postcode, the number of passengers and cases, and any bulky items such as sea bags, sailing kit or golf clubs. For riverside properties with tricky access, add a note. If you want to stop on the way, perhaps to collect someone in Southampton or Winchester, add it as a stop and the fixed price includes it.
