Swindon sits right on the M4, which makes it one of the more predictable long-distance runs out of Gatwick. Once the driver is round the M25 and heading west, it is motorway nearly all the way. How the journey works
The driver takes the M23 north and the M25 anticlockwise past Heathrow to junction 15, then the M4 west through Berkshire and into Wiltshire. There is a reasonable rail option. Great Western Railway runs trains from Gatwick across to Reading, and from Reading there are frequent fast services west to Swindon. With a good connection, it takes around two hours or a little more. Swindon station is close to the town centre.

Swindon grew from a small market town on the hill into a major industrial centre when Brunel's Great Western Railway built its locomotive works here in the 1840s. The workers' cottages of the railway village still stand near the station, and the old works buildings now house the STEAM museum and the designer outlet. If you are visiting family in the older streets around Faringdon Road or Emlyn Square, the driver can get right to the door, though some of the terraces are narrow and parking is tight.
