Bath is one of the most visited cities in Britain, and a large share of its overseas visitors arrive through Heathrow. The good news is that Bath is almost a straight line west along the M4. The less good news is that the last stretch, off the motorway and down into the valley, is slower than many people expect. A taxi from Heathrow Airport to Bath costs from £209 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and takes you to your hotel, holiday let or home without changing trains.

From Heathrow to the Avon valley

The driver takes the M4 west from Heathrow past Reading, Newbury and Swindon to junction 18. From there, the A46 drops down through the Cotswold escarpment, past the village of Dyrham, into the north of Bath. It is a steep, winding descent with lovely views across the city when you come round the last bend.

Around an hour and three quarters to two hours is typical. The M4 is usually steady, but the A46 into Bath and the London Road on the city's eastern side queue at peak times, and the city centre itself has a lot of traffic for its size. Late evening arrivals are often noticeably quicker.

Driving in Bath

Bath's centre is compact and largely Georgian, with narrow streets, steep hills and a number of bus lanes and restricted roads. The city also has a Clean Air Zone, which our vehicles comply with, so there is nothing extra for you to pay. Drivers who know the city can get you to the door much more smoothly than one relying on a satnav, especially for the crescents and terraces on the hills above the centre.

For hotels in the pedestrianised heart of the city, around the Abbey, the Roman Baths and Milsom Street, the driver will stop at the nearest point the car is allowed and help with the bags. The Royal Crescent, the Circus and the streets around Lansdown are all reachable by car.

Holiday lets and the Cotswolds

A lot of visitors stay in cottages and holiday lets outside the city. We regularly drive to Bradford on Avon, Box, Corsham, Castle Combe, Lacock and the villages of the southern Cotswolds. Some of these places have narrow lanes and no house numbers, so add directions or a what3words address to your booking. If you are collecting keys from a key safe, the driver can wait a few minutes while you check you can get in.

Train or coach instead?

Bath is easy to reach by public transport from Heathrow, and it is worth saying so. You can take the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express to Paddington and then a Great Western Railway train to Bath Spa, or the RailAir coach to Reading and join the same line there. The trip takes around two hours. National Express also runs coaches from Heathrow to Bath.

For a solo traveller or a couple with light luggage, that is good value. For a family, a group, or travellers with large cases going to a cottage outside the city, the car is the simpler choice. Bath Spa station is at the bottom of the city, and many hotels and homes are a steep walk or another taxi away.

Heathrow's charges for your trip home

If someone is driving you back to Heathrow privately, they should know about the forecourt charge: since January 2026, each entry to a terminal drop-off zone costs £7, with a ten-minute limit and an £80 penalty for overstaying, halved if paid within 14 days. The free option is the Long Stay car park, which gives 30 minutes free with a shuttle to the terminals. With a pre-booked taxi, the fixed fare covers the drop-off.

Meet and greet at Heathrow

Your driver waits in the arrivals hall at your terminal with a name board. Heathrow's terminals are not all together, with Terminal 5 on its own road and Terminal 4 on the southern side, so tell us your terminal when you book. We track your flight, so delays are not a problem, and the time spent at passport control and baggage reclaim is included.

Choosing the right vehicle

A saloon suits one or two people with standard luggage. An estate or MPV gives a family room for cases and a pushchair. For a special trip, the Mercedes S-Class or the electric BMW i7 makes the drive along the M4 an occasion in itself.

Bath for a wedding or an event

The city's Georgian assembly rooms, Pump Room, hotels and country houses nearby host a lot of weddings, and many guests fly in from overseas. If you are coming for a wedding or a big event, book early, especially on summer weekends, and tell us the venue. For groups of guests, an eight-seat MPV can take everyone from Heathrow together.
